Somewhat effective, IF you were in the correct cave. Perhaps we've gone back too far in history for the purpose of this illustration.

3 Ring Binders

3 Ring Architectural Binders

In the past, large libraries of cumbersome architectural binders lined the shelves of Design Professionals offices around the world. Every manufacturer would be responsible for sending every recipient new printed literature or technical information with the hopes that the new information would be updated in their binder. Often, manufacturer's reps would be responsible for this task during personal sales calls. It could take weeks, or literally months, for new information to be pulled through into their customer's hands.

Websites

Company Websites

Things began to change with the introduction and popularity of website development, manufacturer's would house all current information on their website for architects and design professions to update or research as needed. Unfortunately, since there was (and is) no industry standard for navigating to content, the design professional was forced to drill down through several corridors and dead ends to find key information they needed at a moments notice. More often than not, many design professionals chose not to use a manufacturer, not because of the physical properties of the company's product offerings, but due to the structure of their website. Plus, not everyone always had access to the internet at all times (on the jobsite or out in the field, for example), limiting the availability of important information.

CD's and DVD's

CD/DVD

CDs and DVDs seemingly made the process more streamlined. manufacturers would simply burn all of their key technical information on a disc (or even on a more expensive jump drive) and sent it to their audiences. But often, as is the case in this industry, as soon as the disc went out the door, the company would either add or discontinue a product, or there would be an additional code update, or perhaps even the warranty or installation instructions would change. CDs, DVDs, Jump Drives would all be outdated and the process would need to start anew... maybe several times a year.

Too much confusion. Too many costs. Too many headaches.
